The NWSL commissioner has yet to answer the accusations‚ but he has promised a thorough investigation. As a result‚ the NWSL has suspended Riley from his position. His suspension is a result of the allegations. The league has also taken steps to address the issue. It has issued a code of conduct that states that employees should avoid sexual harassment. If a member of staff violates this policy‚ they will be subject to disciplinary action. However‚ the NWSL has not done so. After the investigation‚ Riley resigned as commissioner of the NWSL. The accusations against him include coercion of a player‚ sexual harassment‚ and anti-gay comments. The North Carolina Courage fired Riley after accusing him of the misconduct. The league has refused to reinstate him. A spokesperson for the NWSL said the NWSL will continue to investigate Riley and take necessary steps.

Following a scandalous incident‚ the National Womens Soccer League (where the vast majority of US Womens National Team players play domestically) is now in chaos. Bombshell report this article details allegations of abuse against the long-serving head coach of the league. Paul Riley‚ a former North Carolina Courage coach who was also the two-time NWSL Coaches of the Year‚ is widely considered one of the best coaches in the league. According to allegations‚ Riley was using his authority to coerce players into having sex and to force them to kiss each other for his pleasure. Riley was fired as his head coach and his license to coach soccer in the US has been revoked by the US Soccer Federation. This is because of Riley's unacceptable behaviour.
Riley's abuser tendencies were brought to the forefront by reporting from The Athletics Meg Linehan. Sinead Farrelly‚ Meleana Ma Shim and Meleana Mantishim were two of Riley's former players. They both admitted to the indecent conduct that they suffered while playing on Rileys teams. Farrelly‚ Shim and others described Riley's grooming behaviors. He capitalized on their youth and inexperience as well as the dependence they had on him to help them push the limits of their relationships while he was at the Portland Thorns. The players claim that Riley lured them by inviting them for dinner and calling them in hotels. He would then push them to consume alcohol‚ and pressure them into committing sexual acts.

Farrelly maintained that every interaction was coercive‚ and the same pattern continued across franchises over many years. Shim claims she has never had sex or dated Riley but that she was afraid her coach would try to seduce Shim. He is also accused of winning-and-dining with her‚ just like Farrelly. He was also accused of sending her explicit pictures via text and inviting him into his hotel room‚ while she was only wearing underwear. Riley is also accused of having bribed Farrelly‚ Shim and Shim in return for a lower conditioning program at the practice that day. Both women claim that he disparaged them and other people for their sexual orientations.

The NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird quit‚ while Lisa Levine‚ general counsel to the league was fired days after Linehan's article. According to the report‚ Baird and Levine were accused of failing to respond when they learned about Riley's allegations against Shims. Both NWSL players and fans continue to demand accountability for Baird‚ Levine and other officials. The franchise still has some of its top officials‚ including members of the Thorns' front office that oversaw Riley's investigation. The North Carolina Courage employees responsible for Riley's hiring‚ despite the fact that Riley was under investigation for his conduct‚ have not been punished.
