Hillary Clinton approved the leakage to the media of information claiming a connection between Donald Trump's bank and Russia in 2016. This was not confirmed by the campaign‚ as Clinton's campaign manager testified Friday. Robby Mook was Clinton's campaign chief. He stated in federal court‚ that the Trump campaign heated up in late summer and early autumn 2016. Marc Elias‚ then a Perkins Coie lawyer‚ informed Mook that campaign staff had been briefed by cyberactivity experts on data linking the Trump Organization to Alfa Bank (a Russian financial institution that has ties with the Kremlin)‚ and that the Trump Organization also linked with it. Clinton is placed in the middle of an unprecedented leak to the media by Mook‚ whose testimony was the first. This led to Clinton's arrest. FBI quickly ruled out the connection between Trump Organization and Russian bank. Michael Sussmann was then Elias's law partner. Justice Department special counsel John Durham has indicted him on allegations that he misled the general counsel of the bureau to conceal his connections to Clinton. Mook provided the account on the fourth of Perkins Coie‚ an expert in cyber- and national security laws. This is widely regarded as a test of Durham‚ the Connecticut-based long-serving U.S. Attorney who was initially assigned by Trump's attorney General‚ William Barr to investigate allegations that the FBI and other federal agency had wrongfully conducted their investigation into the alleged Trump/Russian ties. Although Durham's prosecutors are still at the end of their case‚ Christopher Cooper (the judge presided over the trial) allowed the defense to call Mook before he left the country to go on a scheduled trip. However‚ it is not clear what Mook's testimony regarding the Sussmann charge will have on the country. Mook claimed that he learned about the allegations against Alfa Bank from a source he did not know. He said that he recalled giving the information to a reporter to help him remember more. Mook stated that the Clinton Campaign did not possess sufficient information or expertise to verify the truth of the information.

Robby Mook is Hillary Clinton's campaign manager. He speaks to journalists on Oct. 28‚ 2016‚ while en route from Cedar Rapids to Iowa. (Brian Snyder/Reuters) John Podesta was the Clinton campaign chair. Mook stated that he had told Clinton that the campaign would like to share information about Alfa Bank with the media. Clinton agreed. Mook stated that the primary purpose of giving data to media was to allow a journalist to investigate the matter and confirm the information. Eric Lichtblau (then with the New York Times) and a reporter at Slate were made aware of the campaign's information. Mook was not clear about who exactly in the campaign’s press team leaked the information. Slate published an extensive story on the link between Alfa Bank and Trump‚ published just days before the election under the headline "Was a Trump Server Communicating with Russia?" The New York Times also published that day a report by Lichtblau‚ another journalist‚ claiming that the FBI was pursuing an extensive investigation into possible Trump connections to Russia. This included the pursuit of a lead about a possible Trump/Alfa Bank communication link. The Times noted‚ however that the FBI concluded that Trump/Alfa could have an innocuous explanation. Hillary Clinton tweeted the following day‚ despite this caveat: Computer scientists have apparently discovered a covert server connecting Trump Organization and a Russian bank. Jake Sullivan‚ a campaign adviser‚ released a statement stating that this could be the strongest link between Donald Trump's and Moscow.

After opening his defense‚ Attorney Michael Sussmann leaves a Washington‚ D.C. federal courthouse on Tuesday. (Julia Nikhinson/Reuters) Mook's testimony proved that the Clinton campaign was involved in the spreading of unsubstantiated Alfa Bank claims. However‚ Sussmann may have been able to support his defense by pointing out that Mook approached James Baker (then the FBI general counsel) about the Alfa material. Mook stated that he didn't know Sussmann was involved in the production‚ distribution or circulation of Trump/Alfa Bank claims. Elias had testified previously that he did not know that Sussmann had taken the Alfa Bank materials to the FBI. He also never authorized his taking such material. On Friday‚ a former CIA counterintelligence officer identified as Kevin P. stated that he met with Sussmann in February 2017‚ to discuss allegations against Alfa Bank. Sussmann claimed he wasn't representing a client. He also stated that other Perkins Coie lawyers did not represent Clinton Campaign or the Democratic National Committee‚ but such work was irrelevant to the reasons he contacted the CIA.

According to Sussmann‚ he had contacted the CIA general counsel in September 2016. However‚ he didn't get back to him so he arranged the February meeting through third parties including a former CIA official. According to the CIA official‚ Sussmann had told him that he previously contacted Baker at FBI for similar information. According to the former CIA official‚ Sussmann was informed by CIA officials at the meeting that the information he had provided was most likely going to be shared with the FBI.
