Last offseason‚ the Pittsburgh Steelers had a chance to sign JuJu Smith-Schuster on a one-year contract‚ but he chose to return to his hometown team. While he will miss the entire 2021 season‚ he will play in the Wild Card game against Kansas City. His new relationship with quarterback Patrick Mahomes will give him a chance to thrive in the explosive offense in Kansas City. Despite his struggles‚ Smith-Schuster can still be an extremely productive No. 2 receiver in the right offense. Although he has not yet reached the 900-yard mark in a season‚ he was the team's top wideout in the past two seasons‚ and this will only make him a better player. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft has been a Steelers' offense staple for five seasons. He had a career high of 111 catches for 1‚426 yards and 26 touchdowns‚ and was able to play an integral role in the Steelers' offense during his rookie year. This year‚ though‚ the team's quarterback Patrick Mahomes will have to figure out what to do with Smith-Schuster's free agent availability. While the Steelers don't know their QB situation‚ they can at least be sure that Smith-Schuster will remain in the NFL and continue to grow as a receiver. In addition to the new quarterback‚ Smith-Schuster will also have an incredible receiving corps for the Chiefs. The receiving group in Kansas Metropolis has been incredibly impressive‚ with Travis Kelce and Mecole Hardman leading the way. The Pittsburgh Steelers are a team in desperate need of a wide receiver. While Smith-Schuster has the best name in the NFL‚ he is not the best fit for the Chiefs. They have to make sure that they have a QB in place before the draft. Having a healthy Ben Roethlisberger is essential for the Steelers. After being injured in his rookie year‚ Smith-Schuster signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs in order to play with the team's new quarterback‚ Patrick Mahomes. The move is unlikely to make the Steelers happy. The new QB should have a better relationship with Smith-Schuster. In the meantime‚ the QB's position will not be in the right place for the Chiefs to win a Super Bowl. It's hard to imagine a scenario where Smith-Schuster would join the Chiefs. His new team is in a difficult position to retain JuJu. A few other players could have an impact on his future. The Chiefs will need him to find a QB.
But there's no guarantee that the quarterback will even play well this season. If they do‚ it will be tough for the Chiefs to keep the star wideout on the field. The emergence of a young quarterback in the Pittsburgh Steelers' backfield is a big concern. Despite Smith-Schuster's career-best performance in 2018‚ he did not make a Pro Bowl appearance. He was limited to only 15 catches for 129 yards. That leaves the Chiefs with a tough situation when it comes to their quarterback. The Pittsburgh Steelers are not in a position to guarantee a QB. With Smith-Schuster's one-year contract‚ the Steelers don't know how they'll replace him. But‚ they do have a great need at wide receiver. And that's exactly what they need right now. The Chiefs need an experienced‚ talented receiver‚ and Smith-Schuster will provide it. The Pittsburgh Steelers have no idea what the future holds for their quarterback. The move of Smith-Schuster to Kansas City is a huge boost for the team's passing game. However‚ it won't be a surprise if the Chiefs sign the wide receiver. If the former second-round pick is back to the NFL‚ he could have a new chance to earn his living.
JuJu Smith-Schuster tells me he chose the #Chiefs because:
“I am going to play with a future Hall of Fame QB, to play with one of the best to ever do it. My goal as a player is to win, so I’m going to Kansas City with the hopes of winning a Super Bowl.” — Taylor Bisciotti (@TaylorBisciotti) March 18, 2022
