A Russian politician has said that Russia should demand the return of Alaska and the historic settlement in California to pay for its war against Ukraine. The former colony was occupied under the guise of de-Nazification but Moscow has been unable to topple Kyiv‚ and it has been under a crippling economic black cloud since the sanctions were put in place. A Russian politician has said that the U.S. needs to pay back the money it spent on sanctions and the Soviet Union gained from annexing those areas. This is an outrageous demand‚ and one that should be met with suspicion and disdain. Unfortunately‚ Russia's economic and political state is in trouble because of Western sanctions. In addition to the monetary costs of reclaiming these lands‚ the government of Russia is facing a huge debt crisis that will hurt the country for years to come. As Russia's economy suffers‚ the president of the Russian Federation has sworn to rewrite history and excuse the war in Ukraine. However‚ there is no evidence that the country has ever seriously considered reclaiming Alaska. The state was sold to the United States for $7.2 million in 1867‚ but a Russian politician says the demand is about nationalistic appeal rather than economic reality.

Good luck with that! Not if we have something to say about it. We have hundreds of thousands of armed Alaskans and military members that will see it differently. https://t.co/ji0Hiza1TE — Governor Mike Dunleavy (@GovDunleavy) March 15, 2022
