In a perfect strategy‚ McLaughlin held off defending IndyCar champion Alex Palou in the final 15 laps. Scott Dixon finished eighth‚ and a special message to his New Zealand-based parents was sent in the victory lane. The tenacious McLaughlin was the only driver to challenge Scott for the championship after he led for 49 laps and made 12 passes. His teammate Jimmie Johnson closed on him‚ but was unable to make any passes in the closing stages. The two drivers managed to negotiate the lap traffic and win the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The Kiwi will now focus on racing in the IndyCar series in its first race of the year at Texas Motor Speedway.
