Villarreal Keeps on Surprising With 1-0 Champions League Quarterfinal Win
After beating Juventus in the round of 16 to advance to the CL semifinalsâ Villarreal have continued their remarkable form against Bayern Munich. The first leg of their quarterfinal match saw Villarreal defeat Bayern Munich 1-0 thanks to a goal by Arnaut Danjuma in the first half. Only the second loss for Bayern in their last 30 Champions League matchesâ they are now in the semifinals.Villarreal undefeated in Europe in 2020/21
The Villarreal CF is a Spanish professional football club in Villarrealâ Spain. The club plays in La Liga. The club has been undefeated in the continent since 2000. Several top European teams have failed to beat Villarreal. Here's how they got there. A team's record is always a good indicator of its future performance. Here's a look at what makes Villarreal tick. As of 18 weeks agoâ Villarreal were sitting on the brink of a Champions League spot and were only two defeats away from Barca and Sevilla. They are still going strong in seventh placeâ but have lost their unbeaten home record to Betisâ Atletico Madridâ and Osasuna. In Europeâ Villarreal finished second in the groupâ and beat Dinamo Zagreb and Dynamo Kyiv to reach the semi-finals. The Villarreal CF will need a big performance to go undefeated in Europe in 2020/-21. The Spaniards are already unbeaten this season in the Europa Leagueâ and the 1-0 win over Manchester United last month has only fueled their belief in an elusive Champions League spot. The fans will be celebrating Villarreal's winâ and Unai Emery must be congratulated. If Villarreal are to reach the quarter-finals in the UEFA Champions League this seasonâ they must get past Bayern in the last-16. Bayernâ meanwhileâ have reached the last eight in their last 11 Champions League games. This is Villarreal's first appearance in the semi-finals since 2011/12. While Bayern are an overwhelming favourite in this year's Europa Leagueâ Villarreal have not lost in their last five games. With a crowd of 50â577 and an Old Trafford stadium with 74â140 seatsâ Villarreal can expect a tough time. It would be a coup for Manchester United to get past Villarreal in this finalâ but if the Spaniards can maintain their current formâ the trophy will be theirs. They'll also be able to beat Manchester United if they can find a way through in injury time.Unbeaten run against non-Spanish opposition
In the 2020/21 seasonâ Villarreal were unbeaten against non-Spanish oppositionâ recording ten wins and three draws in the UEFA Europa League. This was the club's third consecutive run to the knockout stages of the competition. In both the 2010/11 and 2005/06 campaignsâ Villarreal reached the quarter-finals. Their last European defeat came at the hands of Arsenal. Since thenâ Villarreal have lost only four of their last 34 matches in all competitionsâ and have won 26 of them. This seasonâ they have averaged 3.4 goals per game. Villarreal have been boosted by the form of Robert Lewandowskiâ who has scored 12 goals in eight Champions League matches. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the only other players with that many goals in UEFA competitions. This unbeaten run will not be valid as long as Villarreal remain in the Champions League. The defeat against Villarreal ended Manchester United's unbeaten run against non-Spank teams. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was famously quoted after the game that his players hadn't turned up. The two teams went to the Europa League final and Villarreal won in an 11-10 penalty shootout. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has never beaten a La Liga team in a European final - a fact that continues to confound the Englishman. Bayern Munich are the heavy favourites to win the Champions Leagueâ but Villarreal's record against Bundesliga sides is unmatched. Bayern were unbeaten in 22 away matches in the Champions League. The team is unbeaten against non-Spanish teams since 2009â although they had to go to Germany to face Wolfsburg in the round of 32 second leg. In the last two yearsâ Villarreal has won three of four knockout matches against Bundesliga sides. The result was a deserved win for the La Liga side. The visitors had a poor first half and were largely relegated to third. Manchester United had a number of good chances but were not able to take them. They also missed a golden opportunity to add to their lead when Moreno intercepted a pass from the German defender Manuel Neuer. The goal was then cancelled out by a VAR checkâ after which Moreno's header went over the bar.Unbeaten run against Bayern Munich
In the UCLâ Villarreal continued their unbeaten run with a 2-0 win against Bayern Munich. Pau Torres and Danjuma provided a powerful attacking spine for Villarreal. In goalâ Pau Torres was spectacularâ with the former making the most saves in a Villarreal shirt. Meanwhileâ Etienne Capoue and Dani Parejo were also fantastic. In midfieldâ the experienced Roca and Geronimo Rulli kept Villarreal in the game. Villarreal continued their unbeaten run against Bayern Munich by defeating the German side in the first leg of the Champions League. While Bayern were able to limit the threat posed by Robert Lewandowskiâ Villarreal also created numerous opportunities in the final third. Francis Coquelin's goal was disallowed for offsideâ while Gerard Moreno hit the post. Alfonso Pedraza missed a good chance for Villarreal. While Bayern will be disappointed with their first-leg performanceâ they will be determined to respond in the second leg at the Allianz Arena. On a positive noteâ the win over Juventus in the last round capped a remarkable run of ten consecutive home games without a defeat. While Juventus had been a stern testâ Villarreal's discipline and tactical mastery paved the way for victory. Villarreal have not been beaten in the Champions League since September 2017. But if Bayern can win this roundâ they can do so. Despite their European recordâ Unai Emery's side have never lost a Champions League match. Villarreal's unbeaten run is a testament to his work since the beginning of the season. Bayernâ meanwhileâ have struggled in the Champions Leagueâ but their Europa League record is impressive. In addition to their Champions League recordâ Villarreal won the Europa League for the fourth time in six years. The two teams will face each other in the 2021-22 quarterfinals. Neeladri Bhattacharjee will be bringing live updates on the match with pre-match buildupâ minute-by-minute updatesâ and match highlights. Bayern have won both home games against Villarrealâ but Villarreal have a better overall record. While Bayern have a superior record against Villarrealâ they've only scored one goal against them.Corentin Tolisso out for Bayern
FC Bayern Munich have confirmed that they will be without two of their key players this weekend. Corentin Tolisso and Bouna Sarr have both picked up a muscle strain at Freiburg. Both players are out for the Villarreal match. Neither player has confirmed he will play against the La Liga side. Tolissoâ who was born on August 3rdâ is the seventh Frenchman to play for Bayern. The French midfielder was forced off the field with tears after Bayern's 4-1 victory over Freiburg on Sunday. Tolisso has suffered four muscle injuries this season. Bayern have not yet offered him a new contract due to the persistent injury troubles. As of nowâ the Italian has only played 684 minutes of Bundesliga football this campaign. Tolisso is a big missâ and could not even be counted on for the rest of the season. It is unclear if Tolisso will stay at the club beyond this season. His contract with Bayern is up at the end of Juneâ meaning he can choose where he wants to play. With his history of injuries and inconsistent performancesâ Tolisso has failed to secure a regular spot in the squad. He hasâ howeverâ made a name for himself in recent weeksâ and has been playing well in a relegation battle with Leon Goretzka. In the pastâ the defending champion Bayern Munich have had trouble fielding a competitive starting lineup. In Octoberâ they were thumped 5-0 in the German Cup. It's unlikely that the defending champions will be able to field a competitive starting lineup against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga. A lack of quality in the starting line-up makes it difficult to field a competitive lineup.0 - Villarreal are the first side to keep a clean sheet against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League since Liverpool in February 2019, ending a run of 30 consecutive games in which the German side had netted at least once.
